UR014 2LP
Pete Philly & Perquisite - Mystery Repeats
released: January 24th 2008 (worldwide)

The long-awaited 2LP-version of Pete & Perq's second album 'Mystery Repeats'. On 'Mystery Repeats', Pete Philly & Perquisite take their mission to widen the boundaries of the Hip Hop genre, to a new creative height. "Bringing analog sound back in times of plastic" is how they phrased their quest which started in 2005 with the release of the 'Mindstate' album. The 2-year route brought the duo from a small upper room release party, via gigs in Cape Town, France, Belgium, Spain, Germany, Scandinavia, Los Angeles, performing with the likes of Kanye West, Saian Supa Crew and James Brown (RIP), to festivals and sold out shows all over The Netherlands. With a suitcase full of new experiences and new musical inspiration the MC/producer-duo traveled to a little house in the North of France to write, and worked night and day in their Amsterdam studio to finish their second full length album. The result they named 'Mystery Repeats'. Added to their sound of jazz, classical, broken beat and soul, are influences from all over the globe: flamenco, samba, reggae and afro beat. 'Mystery Repeats' is a sonic document boosting with diversity and ambition; destined to reveal itself anywhere, anytime.

Arts The Beatdoctor - Transitions
released: July 16th, 2007 (Netherlands/Belgium)

With his debut-EP Fragments (Unexpected, February 2006), Dutch beatsmith Arts the Beatdoctor showed his musical diversity with a collection of jazz-inflicted hiphop-tracks which were mostly characterized by their nightly atmosphere. With his full-length debut album Transitions he continues on this road in a truely original way. The album features 15 tracks, and is the product of 3 years of sampling, tweaking and composing. It stirs up a complex stew of emotions: melancholy being one of the most tongue-catching ingredients, supplemented by foreboding, a few tablespoons of tension and a few splashes of release. Comparisons to artists such as DJ Shadow, Krush and RJD2 spring to mind with his blend of atmospheric and cinematic hip hop beats. Apart from the aforementioned artists, Arts finds his inspiration in jazz and classical music: “What really gets to me are the harmonies used. There's a lot of stuff that's about ‘playing wrong notes, but making them sound right’. For that quality, jazz is a good starting point if you want to make music that's surprising, exciting.” With featurings by Pete Philly, Skiggy Rapz and The Proov, Transitions became a very personal and introspective album which can't be left unnoticed by anyone interested in true music. Transitions has been released in Japan in collaboration with P-Vine Records and will be distributed in The Netherlands & Belgium by PIAS.

Pete Philly & Perquisite - Mellow
released: March 27th 2006

The third single of the Mindstate album, Mellow ft. Senna, also includes two exclusive unreleased tracks. Rockin' It Like is a song that was created for a special project from VPRO's 3voor12 in which several producers were asked to make a track by solely using samples from an archive of exotic Indonesian and Chinese traditional instruments. The result Rockin' It Like is an awkward but certainly banging minimalistic Pete & Perq track that was before only available as free download-track. Dazzled Kids is even more exotic. Originally being a track of Dutch rockgroup Voicst, Pete & Perq flipped the track the way only they can... Check out the first rocktrack they ever did and compare it to the original at www.voicst.com!

Pete Philly & Perquisite - Mindstate
released: April 4th 2005 (NL) / April 18th 2005 (Europe) / May 8th 2006 (United States/Canada /Australia / New Zealand)

Soulful, thought provoking and brimming with musicality, 'Mindstate' is the fruit of 18 months worth of labour by MC Pete Philly and producer Perquisite. These men not only merge hiphop with styles as insanely disparate as 60's psychedelica, classical music and broken beat, they actually make it sound effortless. On 'Mindstate', Pete and Perq marshall help not only from vocalists Senna, Cee Major (The Proov) and Jazz musicians Jesse van Ruller (winner of the prestigious Thelonious Monk Competition / Washington 1995) and Benjamin Herman (winner of the Wessel Icken Prize in 1991, Edison Award in 2000), but also from none other than Talib Kweli, who didn't hesitate to declare Pete Philly & Perquisite to be 'musically (...) light years ahead of the game'.

Monsieur Dubois - Monsieur Dubois s'Amuse EP
released: May 13th 2004

In the past years, Monsieur Dubois has created a strong live reputation with their unique blend of Afro-vibes and 70’s Souljazz which is often referred to as ‘Danceable Hardjazz’. The group, which was founded in the city of Rotterdam in 1999, became finalist in the Dutch Jazz Competition of 2001 and made an impressive debut at the internationally renowned North Sea Jazz festival last year. This 6-track EP on Unexpected Records is their first official release. It contains four original tracks by Monsieur Dubois on the A-side as well as two club-orientated remixes on the B-side.

About the remixers:
Perquisite is known from his instrumental NuJazz EP’s which featured Benjamin Herman (2001) and David Kweksilber (2002) as well as for his soulfull productions for hiphop-formations North West Metropolis and the Proov (2003). In 2004 he hooked up with Pete Philly to form Pete Philly & Perquisite. Their debut-album will be released this autumn.
State of Monc operates on the thin line that divides electronic music from a more acoustic approach which results in a sound that could be categorized as ‘Nu-tech-jazz’. Their debut-album ‘Hand to Mouth’ was released February 2002 on City Grooves. Currently they’re working on their second full-length which will probably drop later this year.

The Expressions EP is the first release of North West Metropolis, a collective of producers Perquisite, Omar Rey and Ane, and features the mc's Cee Major, Pete Philly and Kain Slim, singer Delicate Swing and saxophonist Bart Suèr. Perquisite feat. David Kweksilber - Double Vision EP
released: October 2002

This second release of Perquisite on Unexpected Records is a mix of Nu Jazz, Instrumental Hip Hop and Uptempo Funk. Featuring jazz-clarinettist David Kweksilber, the Double Vision EP can be seen as the follow-up project to the Outta Nowhere EP which was released last year on Unexpected Records. With this new release Perquisite and David Kweksilber take the groovy styles of the Outta Nowhere EP to another level with a mix of even more up-tempo, twisted and relaxating beats.

Perquisite, (Amsterdam, 1982) started to create beats in '96. Being a cellist since he is eight years old, he has always been involved with and inspired by all kinds of music. In oktober 2001 he released his debut, the Outta Nowhere EP, on Unexpected Records. This 7-track EP came, without any promotion, literally out of nowhere to become known as a little gem in the Hip Hop / Nu Jazz - movement. His new EP is, just like the last one, the result of improvisations the performer did over Perquisite's beats.

David Kweksilber, (Amsterdam, 1973) plays clarinet and saxophone in different musical fields ranging from classical and contemporary music to jazz. In 2000 he was awarded with the Elisabeth Everts Prize and in februari 2002 he debuted with a Solo Concert at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam. In the classical field he performs as a soloist and with ensembles like the Ebony Band, Schönberg Ensemble and major symphony orchestras. Besides this he plays Jazz, Klezmer, contemporary Improv and funky music with bands like the Transatlantic Jazz Orchestra, the Beau Hunks and the New Cool Collective Big Band. Get funky!
